STATEMENT: The work of Lindsey A. Wolkowicz examines the relationship between us and the spaces we occupy by exploring memory, connection, psychodynamics, and the impacts of perception. In her drawings, Wolkowicz creates interdependent visual relationships between figure, surface, lines, geometry, and color all of which appear to simultaneously interrupt and support one another in space. In a rhythmic combination of contoured limbs, illustrative lines and architectural planes, her mark making reflects the movement, chaos and order found within the state of constantly being between.
Bodies drawn are at once strong and susceptible, seeking to ground themselves through their hands and feet, through touch and relationship, while the destabilizing structures beneath or around them shift. These compositions do not represent physical places but instead turn inside out the emotional and psychological spaces we find ourselves in. They are embodiments of our circumstances and make visible the ways we internally experience situations of grief, fear, uncertainty, change, vulnerability, and comfort. Wolkowicz presents us with bodies grappling to find relationship – to each other, to place, to familiar structures- as anchors within the seemingly constant state of transition that we seem to live in.
