Flight.
The mural is located on the over 230ft long Ten Broeck Avenue exterior facade of The Arc Mid-Hudson, Pecora Center at 139 Cornell Street Kingston, NY.
Flight was commissioned by The Arc Mid-Hudson, and contracted through O+ in the winter of 2021. The Arc Mid-Hudson is a private not-for-profit agency that serves people with disabilities from preschool through adulthood offering programs designed to foster independence, productivity, and participation in community life. Their mission is “To empower people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities to achieve and experience the highest quality of life.” We are guided by the core values of respect, integrity, compassion, and excellence.
Flight was designed and produced as a collaboration with renown international muralist Gaia. The mural design is the result of input gathered from folks served by The Arc Mid-Hudson and Cornell Creative Arts Center, as well as The Arc Mid-Hudson’s Direct Support Professionals, staff, and board members. All of these members of The Arc Mid-Hudson community participated in a survey regarding values, concepts, subject matter and motifs and then the artists engaged in a remote round table with the self-advocacy group of people served called the Renegades. That conversation was essential to the creation of the final design as the artists looked to center the feedback of the people served by The Arc Mid-Hudson in their visual and conceptual choices. The result was Flight, which depicts birds, butterflies and flowers that are native species to the Hudson Valley in a dynamic composition that represents the freedom that comes from receiving the support you need in order to thrive in your environment.
